Published by Manoa. We reviewed public materials from AdvantageTrust, McKesson, Procurement Partners, ModMed, Nitra and AMSURG on September 23, 2026. We haven’t tested any of these products or services for this page. Manoa is one of the options compared.
A multi-site practice can get its purchasing work done in six main ways: with its own staff, through the services in a GPO agreement, through distributor programs, with purchasing software, through a management company or partner, or with Manoa, our purchasing service. Purchasing work here means choosing and pricing items, placing orders, following up with suppliers, sorting out delivery problems and matching invoices. Each option takes on a different share of that work, and the options overlap. Compare them by what each one completes, what stays with your team and how it’s paid.
The table uses the same criteria for every option. The named examples come from public pages we checked on September 23, 2026. They show what each type can look like. They aren’t a complete list or a ranking, and a vendor’s description isn’t evidence of how its service would work for you.
The options side by side
| Option | What it takes on | What stays with your team | How it’s paid | Confirm first | Named examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hiring or reassigning staff | Whatever work you assign, on site and across your systems | Recruiting, training, supervision and cover for absences | Wages, benefits, recruitment and training | Who does the work when that person is away | None named |
| Services in a GPO agreement | Negotiated contracts, member support and any services you buy | Ordering, supplier follow-up, receipt and invoices, unless your agreement assigns them | Membership fee not shown on the example page | Which contracts and services your agreement actually includes | AdvantageTrust |
| Distributor programs | Supply, delivery, ordering options and account support | Deciding what to buy, approvals, receipt and follow-up the program leaves out | No separate support fee shown on the example page | Who acts on a backorder or billing error, and how fast | McKesson Medical-Surgical |
| Purchasing software | Item records, catalogs, approvals, supplier connections and invoice matching | Using the software, keeping data current and acting on what it flags | Price not shown on either example page | Who follows up when the software flags a problem | Hybrent, ModMed Procure |
| Management company or partner | Purchasing reviews, vendor contracts and GPO access, as part of running the site | Approvals, clinical decisions and whatever the agreement leaves out | Part of the partnership or management agreement | What you give up in the partnership, and which purchasing tasks their team does | AMSURG |
| Manoa | Preparing purchases, placing approved orders, following up with suppliers, resolving delivery problems and reconciling invoices | Approvals, clinical decisions, checking deliveries, accounting and payments | No published price. Fee and scope would be agreed in writing before we start | Which of your tasks and supplier accounts we could take on | Manoa only |
The categories blur in practice. ModMed includes its own GPO with its purchasing software, McKesson pairs supply with a surgery center support team, and a management partner takes on purchasing as part of running the site. Doing purchasing work for a customer isn’t unique to any one type, including ours. The useful question is which work still lands on your team after everyone you already pay has done their part.
What to confirm for each option
Hiring or reassigning staff
A person on your team knows your sites, can be there in person and can take on work beyond purchasing. The cost is more than a salary. Budget for recruitment, training, supervision and cover during leave or turnover. Reassigning someone who already has a full job moves the work to them without adding time to do it.
- Which tasks does the role own, and which stay with managers or site staff?
- Who covers the work during leave, turnover or a busy month?
- Which supplier accounts, systems and approval rights will the person need?
The services inside a GPO agreement
AdvantageTrust says it offers more than 2,500 negotiated contracts to non-acute sites of care, including surgery centers, physician offices and clinics, with a support team for members. Its page didn’t show a membership fee. Some GPOs also sell supply-chain services and expert support, and our GPO responsibilities guide describes one example. Contract access and member support are valuable. Neither tells you by itself who places an order, chases a backorder or gets a missing credit.
- Which contracts apply to each site, pack and supplier account, and from what date?
- Which services does your agreement include, and which cost extra?
- What does membership cost you, directly or through the prices you pay?
Distributor programs
McKesson Medical-Surgical describes a surgery center team that works with leaders on strategy, operations and supply chain. It also lists low unit-of-measure ordering and access to clinical support resources. Its page didn’t show a separate fee for that support. A distributor’s team can do a lot for your sites. Ask how far that help reaches when a problem involves another supplier or an invoice dispute.
- Which support comes with your account, and who is the contact for each site?
- Who acts on a backorder, a short delivery or a billing error, and how quickly?
- Does the support cover orders you place with other suppliers?
Purchasing software
Procurement Partners lists a controlled item master with preferred vendors, receipt tracking with inventory values, connections to EDI and non-EDI vendors, and two-way or three-way invoice matching for Hybrent. ModMed says Procure lets practices compare prices and stock across its supplier network, build shopping lists, set up approvals and manage orders for several locations. It also says ModMed GPO comes with Procure at no additional cost. Neither page showed a price for the software.
Nitra markets automated purchasing too, including supplier comparison, order routing and predictive restocking. Its procurement page says getting started is free, and we haven’t checked what the free entry includes. Our Hybrent and Nitra comparisons look at each in more detail.
Software can take a lot of manual work off your staff. Someone still keeps item and supplier data current, acts on what the software flags and follows up with a supplier when a step fails.
- Which functions are in your plan, and which cost extra?
- Who keeps item, price and supplier data current?
- Who follows up when the software flags a mismatch or an order fails?
A management company or partner
AMSURG, which partners with surgery centers, describes a materials management team that reviews a center’s past purchasing across medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, linen, medical gas, waste disposal and equipment maintenance. The center then gets access to AMSURG’s negotiated corporate vendor contracts, and AMSURG helps it join a GPO. That help comes with the partnership, so weigh it against everything else the partnership changes.
- Which purchasing tasks does their team do, and which stay with your staff?
- Which vendor contracts and GPO would your sites move to, and what happens to your current agreements?
- What does the partnership or management agreement ask of you in return?
Manoa
Manoa is a purchasing service: our AI agents and purchasing specialists do agreed work for your team. We prepare purchases, place approved orders, follow up with suppliers, resolve delivery problems and reconcile invoices. You would still decide what to buy and approve purchases and changes. Your staff would make clinical decisions and check deliveries, and your accounting team would post entries and make payments. Payments and stock stay with your team at every stage. Read what we handle.
Other services already do parts of this work, so compare us on the same terms as everyone else.
- Which of your recurring tasks would we take on, in writing?
- Which supplier accounts and ordering channels could we use for you?
- What evidence can we show that the work is done?
How to use this page
Pick the two options that best fit how your sites buy today. One of them may be what you already use. Then give both the same two-week task sample the hire, software or service guide describes. Record every purchasing task for two weeks, with how often it happens, how long it takes, the approval it needs and whether someone must be on site.
Take that sample to each provider. Ask which tasks they would complete, which they would hand back to your team and what evidence you’d get when a task is done. Count the staff time that remains under each option, including approvals and supervision.
In a fictional example, a three-site practice finds that its distributor handles most backorders but nobody owns missing credits. It could compare a part-time hire with extending its distributor’s support to cover credits before looking at anything broader.
You may end up with a combination. Check for gaps between the options you choose and for work you’d be paying for twice. Vendor pages change, so check the current page before relying on any description here.
